T-2 / PSST / Subpart O

Course Outline

Prerequisites: This course shall have no formal pre-requisite.

Course Length: 7-8 hours a day, for 3 days.

Class Size: The maximum number of students that may be trained and tested per instructor shall be fifteen (15) in the classroom session and fifteen (15) in the practical session.

Course Objective:

  • To provide inexperienced and experienced students with recommended practices and guidelines to perform safely while working with production safety systems found in the oil & gas industry.
  • Students will be given the knowledge and taught these skills in a classroom and practical setting. 
  • Students should be able to demonstrate these necessary skills during practical examination and demonstrate knowledge during written examination.

Successful Course Completion:

  • Requires a minimum score of 75% on the written and 100% on the practical.  The score on the practical shall be determined by the student’s knowledge and performance in testing of the safety systems.
  • Students will have no more than three (3) hours to complete the exam.
  • Grades shall be calculated by dividing the number of questions answered correctly by the total number of exam questions (211).
  • Successful completion of practical sessions is also mandatory.

Course Outline:

Day 1:

  • Introduction to T-2 requirements
  • Hydrocarbon reservoirs
    • Explanation of how reservoirs and traps are formed
  • Drilling concepts
    •  Types of drilling rigs and the overall process of hydrocarbon extraction from reservoirs
  • Processing of hydrocarbons
    •  Introduction to well heads and their components
  • Production equipment operations
    • Basic explanation of separators, treaters and other types of production equipment
  • Safety systems versus control systems
    •  How safety systems are integrated with control systems

Day 2:

  • Sub Part O manual
    • MMS, API, and Coast Guard regulations and requirements
  • Common names versus MMS identifications
  • Introduction to abnormal conditions and undesirable events
    • Potential problems and trouble shooting of production equipment
      • Primary and secondary protection
  • MMS 30 CFR 250 & 254
    • Oil and gas drilling and production operations in OCS waters
  • API recommended Practices
    • Introduction to API-RP 14C and its requirements
  • Coast Guard Title 33 CFR
    • Parts – 140, 144, 142, 143, 144, 145, 146, 67.

Day 3:

  • Review / Summary
  • Hands on practical session
  • Examination

Practical Session:

Practical training shall be documented using API RP 14C recommended practices for analysis, design, installation, and testing of basic surface safety systems.  

Hands on Training

  • Practice setting and testing basic surface safety systems.
  • Testing of the well control panel and its associated timing devices
